Bringing discernment, clarity, and a commitment to justice to every client relationship.

Family Law & Estate Planning — Chicago, IL

I'm Joerika Stitt — a licensed Illinois attorney, certified mediator, and collaborative divorce attorney. I am also the founder of My Illinois Court Navigator™, a first-of-its-kind suite of attorney-guided tools built to close the access-to-justice gap across our state.

But before I tell you what I do, I want to tell you how I learned to do it differently.

I've sat in three different chairs

First, as a social worker. For years before law school, I worked at the master's level inside complex family systems. This work teaches you to listen for what people aren't saying, to read conflict clearly, and to stay steady when emotions run high. That training never left me. It shapes how I sit with you, how I assess your situation, and how I guide you toward resolution instead of unnecessary conflict.

Then, as an attorney. I went to law school to turn that instinct for helping families into something I could advocate for—at the negotiating table and, when needed, in the courtroom. Today, I bring both lenses to every matter: the social worker who understands what you're carrying, and the lawyer who knows how to protect it.

And finally, as a client. I've navigated divorce myself, so I'm not imagining what you feel—I've felt it. I know the fear for the people you love most (for me, that was my children) and the worry over what this would mean for them. I know the fear of watching everything you've built across your adult life suddenly feel like it could slip away. I know the sleepless nights and the grief that hides inside the paperwork.

This experience isn't a footnote to my practice. It's the exact reason I built a firm devoted to amicable resolution and proactive planning—so you don't have to carry that weight alone.

Why I practice differently

The traditional legal system often expects you to squeeze into a rigid, adversarial box—to take the most extreme position you can and fight from it. I've seen what that approach leaves behind: depleted bank accounts, years of resentment, and former partners who can no longer cooperate as parents.

Divorce ends a marriage. It doesn't end a family

The people in your life—your children especially—still need the adults around them to function long after the case is closed. I help you make clear-eyed decisions now that protect the relationships and stability meant to outlast the legal process.

My work centers on resolution over litigation: protecting your peace, your assets, and the people you love through strategies built around your real life, not a template. And when a matter genuinely calls for a firmer, more traditional posture, I will advocate fiercely for exactly the outcome you want.

Meeting you where you are

Whether you're uncoupling or building a safety net for what's ahead, I offer a range of ways to work together — so you can choose the level of support that fits your situation:

  • Full Representation — Comprehensive advocacy for amicable divorces and select contested family law matters.

  • Estate Planning — Proactive, compassionate planning, including wills, trusts, and powers of attorney, to protect your wealth, your wishes, and the people who matter most as you step into your next chapter.

  • My Illinois Court Navigator™ — Self-guided, attorney-backed digital tools for clients who want professional oversight without a traditional full retainer.

  • Limited-Scope Services — Targeted help with specific parts of your case, so you can manage the rest on your own terms.

  • Divorce & Transition Coaching — A separate, non-legal service offering private, steady guidance through one of life's hardest transitions. (Coaching is educational and supportive, not legal advice.)

Beyond the Office

When I’m not advocating for clients, I am usually making memories with my kids or serving in ministry. I love exploring new places, cooking up a great meal, and losing myself in a good audiobook. Balancing a purposeful life outside the office is what keeps me grounded and deeply connected to the real-world needs of the families I serve.

You deserve an advocate who listens carefully, thinks strategically, and moves deliberately. That is the standard I bring to every client relationship—and the commitment I will bring to yours.
